Soil and Clay owner, Sabrina Lemery, was raised in rural Connecticut where she was fortunate enough to be surrounded by farms, fresh air, and creative opportunity. Upon entering college she discovered her passion for clay and became intrigued by the material, leading her down a beautiful path of art making and self-discovery. Her fascination with the ceramic process eventually led her to attain a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Hartford’s Hartford Art School in Connecticut.

For Sabrina, creating with clay is an intuitive process. In her latest work she is inspired to create both classic and modern forms which highlight the wonderful qualities of the different clays that she uses. She enjoys subtle texture, color, and sheen, resulting in tasteful contrasts and elegant surfaces. All of her ceramic wares are thrown by hand on the wheel and some are later used for slip casting multiples. Sabrina celebrates being a part of an important, small industry that contributes to sustaining the ancient craft of pottery and feeds her intuitive, artistic nature.

From clay… to soil

After many years of developing her ceramic craft, Sabrina discovered another exciting passion- flower farming! Getting her hands in the soil felt familiar to having clay covered hands, and became a new way to interact and collaborate with the earth. Being surrounded with gorgeous flowers naturally provided the inspiration and opportunity to delve into floral design. The following years would involve the startup of her own small business working as a flower farmer/wedding florist. Organically, this work began to impact her ceramics and led Sabrina to realize she had a unique opportunity to combine all of her interests. From this, Soil and Clay was created! Through her craft, Sabrina provides design-oriented and accessible ceramic wares to small local businesses and individuals. She makes both one-of-a-kind pieces and takes bulk orders for businesses like florists and restaurants, providing these industries with a more sustainable resource option. She hopes that her creations bring joy, comfort and inspiration.
